How Are You Preparing For Retirement?

Jason's Advice/Home Business Potential/How Are You Preparing For Retirement?

Why Understanding Residual Income vs Linear Income Could Change Your Future

Let me ask you a question that might make you slightly uncomfortable.

If nothing changed financially over the next five or ten years, would you be happy with where you ended up?

Think about that for a moment.

Same income structure.

Same reliance on your salary.

Same bills arriving every month.

Same amount being saved towards retirement.

Same number of hours being exchanged for money.

Would that future give you the lifestyle and choices you actually want?

Because one of the biggest mistakes we can make with retirement planning is assuming we have plenty of time to think about it later.

Five years becomes ten surprisingly quickly.

And eventually, “I'll think about retirement later” becomes:

“I wish I'd started preparing earlier.”

Hope Is Not a Retirement Plan

Most of us spend decades working.

We build careers, raise families, pay mortgages, go on holidays, buy cars and deal with the never-ending list of expenses that comes with everyday life.

Retirement can seem like something happening somewhere in the distant future.

So we hope.

We hope our pension will be enough.

We hope our savings will be enough.

We hope the cost of living doesn't rise too dramatically.

We hope our health allows us to continue working.

We hope we'll be able to retire when we want to.

But there's a problem.

Hope isn't a retirement strategy.

Good retirement preparation requires us to start asking difficult questions before we desperately need the answers.

Where will my retirement income come from?

How much will I realistically need?

What lifestyle do I want?

What happens if I want to stop working earlier than expected?

And perhaps most importantly:

Am I building anything today that could continue producing income when I no longer want to exchange as much of my time for money?

That's where understanding linear income versus residual income becomes incredibly important.

What Is Linear Income?

Most people are extremely familiar with linear income, even if they've never heard the phrase before.

The basic model looks like this:

Work → Get paid.

Continue working → Continue getting paid.

Stop working → Eventually, the income stops.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with linear income.

A good job or successful career can provide security, opportunity and an excellent lifestyle.

The challenge isn't necessarily having a job.

The challenge is depending entirely upon one form of income that requires your continued time and activity.

Because eventually, something changes.

You start wanting more of your time back.

And that's when the question becomes:

What happens to my income when I stop working?

Money Without Time… or Time Without Money?

This is one of the biggest reasons I think differently about financial freedom.

Imagine reaching retirement with plenty of time.

You can finally travel.

Spend more time with your family.

Visit the places you've always wanted to see.

Enjoy hobbies.

Help your children or grandchildren.

Do all the things you've been postponing.

There's just one problem.

You don't have enough money to enjoy the time you've finally got.

Now imagine the opposite.

You've done reasonably well financially.

You have money.

But maintaining your lifestyle still requires you to keep working.

You have the money…

But you don't have the TIME.

Personally, I don't particularly like either option!

The objective should surely be to create the possibility of having BOTH.

Enough financial stability to enjoy your life and enough control over your time to actually live it.

That brings us to residual income.

What Is Residual Income?

Residual income works differently from purely linear income.

Instead of your income being completely dependent upon the hours you're working right now, you build something that has the potential to continue producing income beyond the initial work required to create it.

That might come through a business.

Investments.

Intellectual property.

Digital assets.

Royalties.

A leveraged business model.

Or another income-producing asset or system.

But let's make something VERY clear.

Residual income does NOT mean money for nothing.

It isn't automatically passive income.

It isn't guaranteed.

And it certainly isn't a get-rich-quick strategy.

In many cases, building residual income requires considerable effort upfront.

You may need to learn new skills, build systems, develop relationships, create assets, build a customer base or develop a team.

The difference is what you're trying to build.

Instead of only asking:

“How much can I earn from the work I'm doing today?”

you start asking:

“What can I BUILD today that has the potential to keep producing value tomorrow?”

That's a very different way of thinking about income.

Why Having Something Alongside Your Job Makes Sense

People sometimes hear the words side hustle, side gig or side business and immediately assume you're suggesting everybody should quit their job.

I'm suggesting almost the opposite.

Your job can provide the financial stability that allows you to build something else without needing that new venture to immediately pay your bills.

Keep earning while you start building.

A side income can potentially provide greater diversification rather than relying entirely on one source of income.

If something changes with your employment, you haven't necessarily placed every financial egg in one basket.

If your side business grows, you may eventually have additional choices.

If it doesn't become your primary income, it may still provide additional money for savings, investments, debt reduction, holidays or retirement preparation.

There are no guarantees, of course.

But having multiple potential income streams can provide a different type of financial foundation from depending entirely on one pay cheque.

The Power of Leverage

This is where the type of side gig matters.

Not every additional income stream creates leverage.

If you already work 40 hours each week and your side income requires another 20 hours of your direct labour, you've certainly increased your income…

But you've also reduced your available time.

You may end up with more money and LESS freedom.

That's why I believe it's worth exploring income models that have the potential to leverage your time.

Leverage means your income isn't necessarily limited exclusively by the number of hours you personally have available.

Systems can provide leverage.

Technology can provide leverage.

Intellectual property can provide leverage.

Investments can provide leverage.

Teams can provide leverage.

A business that can eventually function without requiring you to personally perform every task can provide leverage.

That doesn't mean you don't work.

It means you're working to build something rather than only being paid for the hour you're currently working.

That's a significant distinction.

Where Will You Be Five Years From Now?

Now let's return to the question I asked at the beginning.

Where will you be five years from now if nothing changes?

And let's make it ten.

If your income continues operating exactly as it does today, what does your financial future look like?

Will you have greater freedom?

Will you have more choices?

Will you be better prepared for retirement?

Will you have built additional income-producing assets?

Or will you simply be ten years older, asking the same questions?

We often worry about the risk of change.

“What if my side business doesn't work?”

“What if I waste my time?”

“What if I fail?”

Those are reasonable concerns.

But there's another risk we should calculate.

What's the risk of NOT changing anything?

What if you reach retirement and realise your pension isn't enough?

What if circumstances force you to stop working earlier than expected?

What if you want to reduce your hours but financially can't afford to?

What if ten years from now you look backwards and think:

“I wish I'd started building something ten years ago.”

Doing something carries risk.

But sometimes doing nothing carries risk too.

Don't Wait Until You Need Another Income

One of the worst times to start desperately looking for another source of income is when you desperately NEED another source of income.

That's why preparation matters.

Building something alongside your job when you don't desperately need the money gives you something extremely valuable:

TIME.

Time to learn.

Time to make mistakes.

Time to develop your skills.

Time to discover what works.

Time to allow something to grow.

Time can be one of the most powerful advantages you have.

Unfortunately, it's also one of the assets we often waste because we assume we have plenty of it.

Financial Freedom Is Really About Choice

For me, financial freedom isn't necessarily about becoming enormously wealthy or never working again.

I enjoy working.

I enjoy building.

I enjoy helping people.

I want to continue doing things that have purpose.

But there's a massive difference between:

“I'm working today because I WANT to.”

and

“I'm working today because financially I HAVE to.”

That's the freedom I'm interested in.

Choice.

The choice to travel.

The choice to spend more time with family.

The choice to reduce working hours.

The choice to pursue something meaningful.

The choice to give more.

The choice to decide how more of your day is spent.

Ultimately, money is most valuable when it helps give you greater control over something even more valuable:

YOUR TIME.

Earn for Today. Build for Tomorrow.

I'm not suggesting you walk into work tomorrow, dramatically throw your resignation letter onto your boss's desk and announce:

“Jason told me to build residual income!” 😂

Please don't blame me for that conversation!

What I AM suggesting is much simpler.

Keep earning.

Keep progressing in your career.

Keep providing for your family.

But start asking:

“What am I BUILDING alongside what I'm earning?”

Maybe it's a side business.

Maybe it's an investment portfolio.

Maybe it's digital assets.

Maybe it's intellectual property.

Maybe it's a leveraged business.

The specific vehicle will be different for different people.

But the principle remains:

Earn for TODAY. Build for TOMORROW.

Because the income you're earning today can take care of today's responsibilities.

What you're building could potentially help create tomorrow's OPTIONS.

Your Future Self Is Waiting

Imagine yourself ten years from today.

You're sitting across the table from the person you are right now.

What would your future self say?

Would they say:

“Thank you for starting.”

“Thank you for thinking ahead.”

“Thank you for making those sacrifices.”

“Thank you for building something alongside your income.”

“Thank you for giving me choices.”

Or would they ask:

“Why did you wait?”

None of us knows exactly what the next five, ten or twenty years will bring.

But we can decide whether we're going to prepare.

Your future isn't created in retirement.

Your retirement is being influenced by the decisions you're making long before you get there.

So perhaps today is the day to start thinking differently.

Not fearfully.

Not desperately.

But intentionally.

You don't have to quit your job.

You don't need to completely change your life tomorrow.

But you DO need to start thinking about the future you're building.

Because five years are going to pass.

Ten years are going to pass.

The question is:
